A funny clip for everyone to check out!

Hey everyone,
In class yesterday I was reminded of one of my favorite episodes from the TV show Friends. Throughout the episode Ross, a palaeontologist, and Phoebe, a hippie massage therapist, argue about evolution. I thought these clips really display the social half of what we were talking about in that there is 150 years telling us what is 'most important' and some people cannot let that go, plus it is really funny to see Ross get all frustrated because it reminds me of some moments in our class too.

agreed! Phoebe's response is fantastic, if for no other reason than to demonstrate the need to be able to entertain alternative notions in a NON-self-destructive way! :)

Spring 2012

This interdisciplinary course studies the lesser known natural historical records of European scientists alongside the more familiar literary works of Romantic Era poets and prose writers. We investigate the way all of these texts employ the non-human as that which restricts the human to, just as it emancipates the human from, the animal that it is (pointing toward Derrida). We consider the principles of taxonomy and natural aesthetics, the generation debates, and theories of evolution, in order to understand 18th- and 19th-century efforts at (re)presenting the natural world.

This blog serves a twofold purpose: as a collection of our critical responses to the works covered in this course and as an assemblage of our responses to each others' critiques.
